Profound - Inspirational – Awe-Striking- Contemplative -Blessed: Just a few words to describe our experience during the Pentecost 2006 Pilgrimage to Italy. Our Pentecost 2006 Pilgrimage started with our experience at St. Peter’s Square and Basilica, the foremost recognized center of our Catholic faith, and the inspirational events we shared with Pope Benedict XVI. It’s not difficult to understand why Rome is identified as the “Eternal City” and the heart of our Catholic Church. The beauty of St. Peter’s, St. John Lateran, St. Mary Major, and St. Paul’s Basilicas is extraordinary. Walking through the catacombs of Rome gives you a profound understanding of what we read in the scriptures about the early Church’s difficulties and sufferings. To pray at the site of St. Paul’s execution; at the graves of the many Popes who have led the Church through times of turmoil and triumph; and at the sacred steps that Jesus walked up to Pilate on before his crucifixion truly humbles one beyond description. What we spiritually experienced can not be compared to anything within our life time. The 2006 Pentecost Pilgrimage was everything we anticipated and went well beyond any of our expectations. The pilgrimage was a reaffirmation of God’s love for us as we witnessed His love through our Pope, His saints, and His people of the world.
