My experience of celebrating Pentecost 2006 with Pope Benedict XVI was a very fulfilling and exhilarating event. I never imagined my trip would be so moving and that I would return home with the most beautiful memories and a deeper understanding of the life of the Catholic Church. Being able to be in Rome to celebrate the feast that marked the beginning of the disciples going forth to spread the faith, with the guidance of the Holy Spirit was remarkable. I remember sitting in St. Peter’s square for the Vigil of Pentecost and as the sun was setting and a cool breeze was in the air, I closed my eyes and listened to the Psalms which were being sung as a four part harmony and I remember this feeling of peace. I thought, “This is what heaven will be like.” The Basilica is this mighty fortress and a great symbol of the strength of the Catholic Church. Along with all the other beautiful moments, holy places and relics that we saw, I came to a greater understanding of the spirit of the Catholic Church. It truly made me realize that because we are all called by name, to be saints here on earth, one has to realize that it isn’t impossible. I got to learn the history and also recognize the young life of the Catholic Church with friends and so many others including the Holy Father. It was such a rewarding and breathtaking experience. In echoing the words of Pope John Paul II that we’ve all heard so many times, I’ve come to a greater understanding of the importance of knowing and practicing your faith. After experiencing this great moment of Pentecost 2006 with fellow Catholics, it became so apparent that no one is ever alone on this journey and we have every reason to never be afraid. |
